                      Some Scenes at North Fair Haven
The Lehigh Valley had two tugs to assist vessels in and out of the harbor at North Fair Haven on Lake Ontario. The “E.P. Ross” was built by Carroll Brothers of Buffalo in 1874 (Official No. 135019;  57’ x6’ x 6’ 28 gross tons.  It was retired in 1893. The “Katherine T. Wilbur” (later renamed “Cortland”)  The “Wilbur”(U.S. #161077)  was built by David Bell of Buffalo in 1895. Measurements 58’ x 17’ x 7’ 54 gross tons  It was renamed “Cortland” in 1903 lasted a very long time. In 1973 it was renamed “Courageous” and was removed from documentation in 1977. It ended its days towing out of Staten Island.  E. P. Ross was president of the Southern Central Railroad in the 1870s. Katherine T. Wilbur was the wife of one-time Lehigh Valley President E.P. Wilbur in the 1880s.  The Southern Central and its successor, the Lehigh Valley operated the coal trestle there between 1872 and 1936. In the early days as many as 20 coal trains arrived daily at North Fair Haven.  Town of Sterling Historical Society collection.






“Trimmers” at work at the coal trestle in the early days. Each wheelbarrow held 400 pounds and during the navigation season these men worked 10 hours a day, six days a week for 17 cents an hour.  Most lived in the village of Fair Haven and had to walk rain or shine two miles to work. It is said they considered themselves fortunate to have a job.  Town of Sterling Historical Society.

They Came into Port Together It was late in the afternoon on a summer day on Aug. 26, 1925. Not a cloud was in the sky. Suddenly on the horizon there appeared three lake schooners, under full sail, headed for Oswego harbor. At first some observers thought they were seeing an apparition or a mirage. Rum running on Lake Ontario

  When rum running moved to Lake Ontario By Richard Palmer One of the most interesting periods of Great Lakes maritime history was the Prohibition era between 1920 and 1933. This was a nationwide ban on the sale, production, importation and transportation of alcoholic beverages under the 18th Amendment known as the Volstead Act. This led to the formation of criminal syndicates that, among other activities, smuggled alcoholic beverages in from Canada. It did not work well and led to some of the worst corruption in American history.  It took years to bring the problems associated with bootlegging and rum running that ran rampant on the Great Lakes under control. When Oswego Was a Major Great Lakes Port

The view is taken from an eminence on Oneida street, and presents a portion of the trestle-work of the Delaware, Lackawanna & Western in the foreground, with a full view of the east side mills and elevators, with Lake Ontario in the distance.    The harbor and river present  complete forests of masts and spars, the whole thing showing off to the best possible advantage.
